Urban Hikes — New York chapter 1
“Travelers, there is no path, paths are made by walking”
Antonio Machado — Spanish poet
Wherever you are, half the world away from home or enjoying a much-needed staycation, a dose of fresh air can liven up a dull day. Vacations aren’t always jam packed with exciting adventures, bungee jumping, roller coasters, or all-night dance parties. The contrary is also true, being too lax can make a vacation nothing to write home about. Will your postcard to friends say,
“Wish I wasn’t here, my sofa is way better”, unlikely.
There is a happy medium, going for a leisurely walk. Urban jungles, beach themed, the destination of your vacation need not be a rugged forest. Concrete and asphalt city streets humming with a symphony of modern life can be just as fulfilling as a walk in the woods. The first urban landscape in this series, New York. Some say is the cultural capital of the world. Let your feet guide you and find out for yourself.
The Big Apple may not be the most obvious city to hike. Central Park is a wonderful respite. I recall visiting a friend who moved to Manhattan, after several stays, I learned on a hot city day, the big park was noticeably cooler than the irradiating heat on city streets.
