Dreamiest Job — Work
Year 2000 served me elation and despair in copious amounts. The highest and lowest moments for my working life were less than 12 months apart. Irish twins. A behavioral economist graphing my working life to date focuses their efforts explaining the impact of a life’s work (in progress), centered on, the middle years, not 1999 (Prince is a musical genius) or 2001 (was a “Chronic” year and an artistic slice of sci-fi celluloid). Year 2000 she emphasizes. Y2K didn’t cause all the computer in the world to erupt ones and zeros blotting out the sun.
We survived. I got my dream job. Hallelujah. Saved. Before she summarizes the greatest job in this career arc, she explores the earlier years. Where the chain of events led to the mountain top.
My early career graph is underscored. Brackets on the margin demonstrate different work eras. In the 90s I changed careers a few times. Tacking a sailboat is the analogy the Chicago University grad student using her laser pointer made a circled motion to alert the auditorium her next segment is a brief history of said careers. How did we get from “here”, to “there”?
She spends about 5 minutes glossing over the gas station attendant and Italian deli dishwasher phase. A side note, purely training ground as both occurred during compulsory schooling years. A similar treatment, and half the time spent on the seasonal work, clerking…
