Deep Tracks — Radio Misfits 15 — Under the Radar Bands
The rock n roll universe is vast. There are more songs radio-worthy than a radio programmer can manage. Maybe that’s a reason (a poor one) why the playlists are static. Yes, the radio audience loves “Freebird” and “Jeremy”. Enough already. Beyond swapping in other excellent songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd” and “Pearl Jam” these two groups and many more celebrated groups have deep song catalogues. Radio programmers are music fans too, I think. Where’s Andy Travis when you need him?
A bigger impact on the radio listener will be adding obscure bands to the mix. Community and college radio channels aside, the same stale songs by bands we love won’t take a break, allow something new to emerge. Imagine a popular commercial radio station playing a song not on their short list.
It will generate buzz:
“Did you hear that song on the radio last night?”
“Who was that?”
The mega-radio conglomerates can keep doing what they do. The independent and smaller radio operators, this is for you, up your game.
