Summer in the northern hemisphere is near. What is synonymous with the sun-drenched season? Surf, songs and siestas. Not necessarily in that order. The early 1960s, a new genre emerged out of the nascent rock n roll phenomena, surf rock. There are dozens of groups who helped pioneer the exotic sounds. The influence on players for decades continues just like the waves breaking on shore.

Summer season invites the landlocked to also enjoy the sunny sounds of the beach side vibes. Inlanders congregate on lakes, rivers and water parks. Good enough! A sandy beach need not be on the margins of the continent. Many cities and green spaces offer a sandy retreat too. Helping set the mood, here’s a short list of tracks to drop on your summer vacation playlist.

1. Dick Dale & His Del Tones/Taco Wagon

The original king of surf guitar, Mr. Dale, is a legend most music fans may not know. Many, however, have heard his famous instrumental “Miserlou”, if not his original version, by the dozens of artists who covered his breakthrough surf anthem. His style is equal parts old world folk, classic country, and rock. The song title might make you hungry, it is a laidback track suited for a sunny day seaside. I can smell those street tacos already.
